Mi Casa Es Su Casa
By G. Evans

The Castro District San Francisco has a diverse population, and an equally diverse variety of culinary options. Kasa Indian Eatery is a great modern take on Indian cuisine available in the heart of the Castro on 18th Street. When you step in to Kasa, you will immediately notice that this is not your traditional Indian restaurant. The food is delicious and the "kati rolls", sort of like an Indian burrito, are a great way to enjoy the various dishes offered at Kasa.

As a resident of the Castro District, I regularly enjoy Kasa's lunch special. It comes with two kati rolls plus a beverage for just $7.95. My favorite is the chicken tikka masala, although it can be very spicy.

Regular mycastro.com readers might remember that I'm not typically a fan of vegetarian fare. Like many Castro District San Francisco residents, I can't resist the feel of flesh between my lips, but I have to admit that Kasa offers some great vegetarian options, including a daily vegetarian special. Sometimes when I order the lunch special, I make the second kati roll the aloo jeera, just to balance the spice of the chicken tikka masala.

The clean, modern interior at Kasa matches the cuisine. Simply order at the counter, and pull up a chair (or a stool) at your favorite spot. The staff is all very friendly, and the line, which can be long, always moves quickly.

Oh, and before I forget, one my favorite things about Kasa is that they offer Cherry Coke! I realize this has nothing to do with Indian cuisine, but like many in the Castro District San Francisco, I have a sweet tooth and Cherry Coke seems to balance the spice of the Kasa fare I most enjoy.

If you're in the Castro San Francisco and in the mood for Indian for lunch, I definitely recommend you stop by Kasa for the kati rolls, or order a thali plate for dinner. The menu is very simple to understand and many of the options are listed below:

Kati Rolls - Flaky, buttery roti wrapped around a dish below - $4.50 each
Thali Plate - Plate of one or two dishes below, roti, daal, & more - $10.95
Chicken Tikka - Char-grilled and marinated naturally raised chicken
Chicken Tikka Masala - Chicken in spicy, creamy tomato sauce
Lamb Curry - Saucy grass-fed lamb and potatoes
Turkey Kebabs - Char-grilled, minced turkey with garlic, herbs and spices
Karahi Paneer - Wok-tossed Indian cheese with green peppers and tomatoes
Aloo Jeera - Cumin-spiced sautéed potatoes
