Finally! That is the first word that comes to mind when recalling my most recent visit to the Castro's newest bar, Blackbird. The Blackbird is a sultry smooth blend of gay, straight, and fanciful right here in the Castro. Not far from Church Street station and the hustle and bustle of Market and Church, Blackbird Bar is a must for a drop-in visit on the way home from work or for leisurely late night chatting with friends and people-watching. Blackbird bar is truly the hippest and newest happening in San Francisco's famous Castro District shouldn't be missed.
The bars interior boasts both modern and eclectic themes while being accommodating and urban. The décor is a breath of fresh air from some of the most recent Castro renovations. Blackbird clearly pulled out all the stops with the design and it makes a huge difference in the ambiance and experience. A great addition to the bar is a vintage photo booth and pool tables that lure patrons to the rear of the bar. Drinks are made with pride and the staff is as fun and friendly as it gets. There certainly isn't a shortage of fun drinks and specials either. There are daily specials on wines by the glass, local artisanal beers, signature cocktails that you won't find anywhere else, and a panacea of rotating specials you can't miss.
Blackbird is diverse cross sectional experience with San Francisco's finest and is enjoying a successful first year under long time San Francisco resident Shawn Vergera, the bars owner. Vergera saw a niche un-met in the Castro when he opened Blackbird. He envisioned a bar where a crowd could gather, have fun, and mingle regardless of orientation. He also wanted the San Francisco vibe and compelling atmosphere. In addition, the focus of the bar's beverage program would be above all else about great drinks and creative embrace. On all accounts Blackbird is hitting its mark.
After many years of managing the Bar on Castro, and having spent time learning the trade all across the city it seems Vaergera is putting his knowledge and talents to good (and much needed) use. His bar is now packed nightly; his bartenders are passionate and knowledgeable, all while being friendly and accommodating.
If you haven't had an opportunity to make it to Blackbird you are missing out. The warm inviting décor, friendly staff, signature cocktails, and even cooler crowd are quickly making Blackbird the spot to lounge, laugh, and love. Check out Blackbird, it won't disappoint.
